From Our Founder Editor’s Note: Some of our readers may not be aware that among the many “hats” I wear is that of serving as a local elected official in my community. I remove that “hat” at the stroke of midnight on December 31st. In this column I share some parting remarks. As the end of my elected term of office draws near I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who contributed to Porter Township’s success these past four years. It took a team effort to: consolidate the operations of our two volunteer fire departments while renovating our Lake Eliza station, create our web site, implement the NOAA weather transmitter and the EWS sirens, host our safety jamborees, tackle the Lake Eliza fire lanes & security lighting, author legislation affording Porter & Union Townships a seat on NIRPC, launch the “take care we’re farming around here” public safety program, and achieve “Indiana Township of the Year” recognition. What I am most proud of is the fact that we accomplished all that we did while “living within our means.” We proved that tax increases are not necessarily required to enhance or increase service. It takes courage, determination and innovation to do more with less, but it can be done- with the help of a little entrepreneurial spirit. I offer heartfelt congratulations to our Trustee-elect Ed Morales and our new Township Board. I am confident they will maintain the tradition of excellence we established. I pass the torch knowing that we accomplished the objectives outlined when we campaigned for office, most notably being the latest and last: an orderly and seamless transition of authority to new leadership full of fresh ideas and enthusiasm. My parting gift is a ½ dozen “realizations” that were reinforced throughout my four years of public service. I am reminded: 1.) that familiarity breeds contempt, 2.) that absolute power corrupts absolutely, 3.) that it is the responsibility of the majority to protect the rights of the minority, 4.) to never confuse activity for achievement, 5.) that elected office was never intended to be gainful employment, and finally 6.) that government should never grow to become one of the principal employers in a community. This was without question one of the most worthwhile and rewarding experiences of my life and I shall be forever grateful to the citizens of Porter Township for affording me the opportunity. It was a pleasure serving you. I was raised #4 of the 10 Wichlinski children. Mom always taught us to “leave the room better than you found it.” I hope you share my satisfaction of mission accomplished! All the Best, Robert J. “Bob” Wichlinski
